PHI-PRO digitises all five statutory enforcement domains for 1,793 Public Health Inspectors serving 21.9 million citizens island-wide.
“Prevention is better than cure”
Welcome
“Prevention is better than cure.” Of all we hear about health, prevention is the most effective and essential principle — and the hardest to practise. In Sri Lanka that task is led by the Public Health Inspector. The service began in 1913 under a curriculum based on that of the British Royal Health Institution.
Over more than a century, PHIs have driven the eradication of smallpox (Wasuriya), the control of communicable diseases, a safe and healthy food culture, the wellbeing of school children, lower occupational health hazards, stronger health education and law enforcement, and wider vaccination coverage. Today 1,793 Public Health Inspectors and Administrative Public Health Inspectors form the front line of prevention island-wide.
